REVIEW: New Menu at Kona Cafe

It's that time of year again where Kona Cafe revamps their menu! This is one of my favorite restaurants on Disney property and I've always love their menus (even though they usually take away most of my favorite dishes), so we took a trip over to Disney's Polynesian Resort to give it a try.

Here's a complete look at the new menu! They have yet to update their allergy menus so we had the chef come to our table to walk Joe through his gluten free options, but one major thing that we noticed is that there is a definite increase in prices from previous menus.

Hawaiian Rolls and Gluten Free Dinner Rolls served with Honey Macadamia Nut Butter

The highlight of dining at Kona Cafe will always and forever be the bread and honey macadamia nut butter that I could ever so easily eat a dangerous amount of.

Surf and Turf Roll

The new surf and turf roll was definitely the number one menu item that I was most excited to try. It's a roll of Kona coffee-rubbed filet, cucumber, chili-spiced lobster, crab, avocado, yuzu aïoli, and sriracha which had me hooked at the mention of coffee-rubbed filet. One of my favorite dishes from Kona Cafe's old menu is the Kona coffee-rubbed pork chop, but I regret to inform you that this roll did not quite live up to my expectations. It didn't really have much flavor and was kind of a let down given that the coffee-rubbed pork set the bar so high for me.

Fire-Roasted Pork Wings

The Polynesian always has the heat when it comes comes to wings, so we decided to get an order of the fire-roasted pork wings. The wings are accompanied by honey bacon & pickled rainbow carrots and the sauce on everything was very delicious!

Lobster and Crab Macaroni & Cheese

The lobster and crab macaroni & cheese was easily the star of the meal. I'm almost positive that this is the exact same mac & cheese that's in the bread cone over at Taste Track for Epcot's International Festival of the Arts (which I love), but you can can actually request that this one be made with gluten free pasta! Even though this is technically considered a "side" item, this mac & cheese goes for $15 and the portion size is easily enough for a small meal!

Large Kona Sampler

After talking over the gluten free options with one of Kona Cafe's chefs, Joe ordered the Large Kona Sampler. It comes with tuna poke, three pieces of nigiri, three pieces of sashimi, and five pieces of California roll. Kona Cafe even has gluten free soy sauce to enjoy with your sushi and Joe really enjoyed it!

All in all, we enjoyed the couple of dishes that we tried from the new menu, but were a bit let down by the surf and turf roll. However, Kona Cafe is still a major must-do in our book and we will definitely be back a whole lot more to work our way through the rest of the menu!
